Cusat lets down Gulf Malayalis

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, MAY 6. Hundreds of Malayali students based in Gulf countries who have applied for the B.Tech. entrance exam of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) feel that they have been taken for a ride.

They say that they have not received the application forms despite having sent the required fee.

In January, Cusat advertised about the entrance exam and Malayali students abroad, who have a quota for the course, were asked to sent $ 100 for the application form and Rs. 540 as admission fee for the entrance exam.

While the exam is scheduled for next week, most of them are still awaiting the application forms.

Some of the students and their parents who spoke to The Hindu said that neither have the forms been sent nor has the money been returned.

Some of the students who managed to get in touch with the Cusat authorities over the phone were informed that the Dubai Shopping Festival (held in March) could have created some communication gap. Some of them were asked to send the fee again.

Efforts to get in touch with Cusat through e-mail (cusat.ac.in) have been futile since mail senders keep getting the message that the addressee's mail box is full, which means that at Cusat, the mail box is never checked.

Meanwhile, some of the students managed to get the forms by requesting their relatives in Kerala to get them directly from the Cusat centre. However, these are general forms under which the students will not be entitled to any reservation.

The parents of many students said that application forms had been promptly sent by other universities which had similar entrance exam procedures.
