Nellithope: AIADMK banks on `sympathy wave'

By S. Nadarajan

PONDICHERRY, MAY 3. The AIADMK has fielded Dr. J. Nannan against the former chief minister and DMK State convenor, Mr. R.V. Janakiraman, in Nellithope.

Dr. Nannan says the sympathy wave in favour of the AIADMK chief, Ms. Jayalalitha, following the rejection of her nomination, is perceptible, and banks on this hope in his battle against Mr. Janakiraman, who has been holding the segment since 1985.

Mr. Janakiraman has nurtured the constituency well. He claims credit for the implementation of a massive drinking water project involving an outlay of Rs. five crores which would also meet the needs of the residents in the periphery of Nellithope.

``We are placing before the people the achievements schedule and would seek votes on the basis of our performance during the four- year term in office,'' he says.

Mr. Janakiraman defeated the former Chief Minister, Mr. D. Ramachandran, of the AIADMK, in the 1996 poll.

Mr. Ramachandran is now contesting as an AIADMK nominee from Mannadipet. Whenever he contested from here, he had won except in 1991.

When he contested from Nellithope much against his wish in 1996, he lost it. This time he was keen that he was fielded in Mannadipet.
