Kancheepuram: 'Put an end to corrupt DMK rule'
By K. Manikandan
KANCHEEPURAM, MAY 3. Appealing to the people to put a stop to the
``misrule'' of the ``corrupt'' DMK regime, the AIADMK general
secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha, today feared that the elections to
the Assembly in Tamil Nadu would not be held in a fair and
democratic manner.
Addressing supporters on Gandhi Road in Kancheepuram town this
evening, Ms. Jayalalitha said that during the last five years of
DMK rule, the Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, had foisted
several cases against her. `` Mr. Karunanidhi's only motive is to
ensure that his son and Chennai Mayor, Mr. M. K. Stalin is
installed as the next Chief Minister and I am afraid the
elections would not be held in a fair manner``, she said and
called upon the electorate to ensure that Mr. Karunanidhi ``along
with his coterie'' was thrown out of power.
The present government had conveniently ignored the sorry plight
of the weavers who were put to untold hardship. It had been very
severe on all people in general and farmers and construction
labourers in particular. The primary task ahead of the AIADMK was
to ensure that the ``atrocities'' under the present government
were put to an end and that ``MGR rule'' was restored. She
introduced Mr. S. S. Thirunavukkarasu, party candidate for the
Kancheepuram Assembly constituency.
Scores of people, especially women had lined up in large numbers
on either side of the GST Road in Chengalpattu district to have a
glimpse of Ms. Jayalalitha. At several places, women performed
``aarthi'', to her. Ms. Jayalalitha also stopped for a few
moments opposite the Melmaruvathur temple.
While the crowd response to the scheduled meetings at
Achcharapakkam, Madurantakam and Chengalpattu were lukewarm, huge
crowds could be seen at Wallajahbad. It took more than one hour
for her to reach Kancheepuram from Wallajahbad, a stretch of 15
km.
