Chhatisgarh BJP to boycott functions
By Our Staff Correspondent
RAIPUR, MAY 3: The fact-finding team of the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) MPs, probing the excesses on their party workers here
last week, will seek the Centre's intervention in invoking
provisions of Article 355 of the Constitution to ensure that the
State Government functions in a democratic manner as enshrined in
the Constitution.
A two-member team, comprising Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad
and Mr. Ashok Pradhan, which spent two days here ascertaining
details of the lathicharge, will submit its report to the Prime
Minister and the Union Home
Minister, Mr. L.K.Advani.
Describing the incident as ``pre-planned'', Mr. Prasad said the
attack had been intended to ``teach a lesson to the main
Opposition party here. But, we will not take things lying low.
Let this be clear to the Chief Minister,'' he said.
During their visit, the two MPs met the State Home Minister, the
DM and the SP. While the Home Minister had admitted that there
were lapses on the part of the administration, the MPs were
highly critical of the behaviour of the SP.
Even in States like Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir any excesses by
the Armymen are considered violation of human rights and action
taken against the erring men. However, no action has been taken
here, Mr. Prasad said.
The State unit of the BJP has also decided to boycott all State
functions as a mark of protest against the police action.
All elected representatives, right from panchayat to Parliament,
have been directed not to attend any programme in which the Chief
Minister or his colleagues are present.
