Film Review: Center Stage
``WE WANTED to make dancing extremely accessible'', says Laurence
Mark, producer, ``Center Stage'', whose aim was to make a film
that would be an authentic portrayal of the ballet world.
Directed by Nicholas Hytner and presented by Columbia Pictures,
``Center Stage'' introduces an ``ensemble of performers'', Amanda
Schull, Zeo Saldana, Susan May Pratt, Ethan Stiefel, Sascha
Radetsky, Ilia Kulik, Eion Bailey and Shakiem Evans. Casting
ought to have been quite a challenge because the artistes had to
be adept at classical ballet, modern jazz, Broadway dancing and
salsa, and act too. The acting crew includes stage and screen
veterans Peter Gallagher, Debra Monk and Donna Murphy.
The youngsters are a group of enthusiastic students vying for a
place in a prestigious professional dance company. They also have
their moments of love, conflicts, joys and sorrows.
Director Hytner attempts to present the lives of these young
dancers, with their goals and commitment intact.
