Help the girl-child

Sir, - The recent raids on child adoption racketeers in Andhra Pradesh have uncovered merely the tip of the iceberg. It is time the authorities, both at the Centre and at the State, look into the whole gamut of woman- status-rights and social development in India.

If the girl-child is to gain importance it is imperative to create a situation in which she will be important to her parents.

The present voluntary family planning programme, given the irrational hankering for a male child, cannot make any headway and the girl-child and her mother are the losers in the bargain.

Conceiving a third child should be made a cognizable offence and be incorporated in the Indian Penal Code. Such stringent measures will also improve health in general and reproductive health in particular.
