By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 3.In a major seizure, Indian and Foreign
currency worth Rs. 2.5 crores was recovered by officers of the
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at the international
airport here from a 33-year-old passenger proceeding to Dubai
today.
The currency was recovered from the baggage of Mr. Siddique
Vayalalikath, hailing from Chelambara in Malappuram district, who
had checked in to take the Oman Airways flight to Dubai.
According to the DRI sources, Indian currency totalling Rs. 1.07
crores was found stacked in one of the pieces of baggage that was
checked-in. The seized foreign currency of various denominations
amounted to Rs. 1.38 crores.
The money was allegedly taken by Mr. Siddique to be handed over
to an unknown person who would have identified him by the colour
of his clothes and physique at the Dubai airport. The DRI sources
said smuggling chains based in the northern part of the State
were behind it.
A team of officials lead by the DRI's deputy director (Kerala),
Mr. P. Jaydeep, effected the seizure. The DRI sources said
further investigations were on.
