Currency worth Rs. 2.5 crores seized

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 3.In a major seizure, Indian and Foreign currency worth Rs. 2.5 crores was recovered by officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at the international airport here from a 33-year-old passenger proceeding to Dubai today.

The currency was recovered from the baggage of Mr. Siddique Vayalalikath, hailing from Chelambara in Malappuram district, who had checked in to take the Oman Airways flight to Dubai.

According to the DRI sources, Indian currency totalling Rs. 1.07 crores was found stacked in one of the pieces of baggage that was checked-in. The seized foreign currency of various denominations amounted to Rs. 1.38 crores.

The money was allegedly taken by Mr. Siddique to be handed over to an unknown person who would have identified him by the colour of his clothes and physique at the Dubai airport. The DRI sources said smuggling chains based in the northern part of the State were behind it.

A team of officials lead by the DRI's deputy director (Kerala), Mr. P. Jaydeep, effected the seizure. The DRI sources said further investigations were on.
