Cotton carnival

ELEGANT KALAKSHETRA saris with typical temple borders, traditional `Sungudis' and Chinnalampattis, Paramakudi saris in soft pastel colours as well as colourful Kanchi and Salem cottons will offer a feast at a special one-day exhibition (May 5) and sale organised by the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles, Government of Tamil Nadu.

Woven by the weavers of 1,500 cooperative societies working under the Directorate, the saris are the result of a happy tie-up between Kalakshetra and the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles, Government of Tamil Nadu. Also on view will be a fascinating range of Kalakshetra designer Kanchipuram silk saris, `Kora silk by cotton' Coimbatore saris as well as eco-weave saris in silk in soft pastel shades.

Yet another attraction is the classic Vilandai cotton sari, Venkatagiri-type in soft pastel colours with or without a zari border. The exhibition also features very elegant designer kitchen linen, part of the Kalakshetra range, which includes aprons, gloves, table linen and curtains, all in a coordinated colour and design scheme. Although cotton steals the show, it is difficult to take one's eyes off the silks on display. The exclusive saris can be experienced at the `3000 Cotton Saris' Exhibition ( 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) at the Conference Hall, Directorate of Handloom Textiles, Kuralagam, II Floor, Chennai.
