Electronic display board installed at T.Nagar bus depot
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MAY 3. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has
introduced an electronic display board to announce arrivals and
departures at the T. Nagar bus depot, Mr. Swaran Singh, Managing
Director, MTC, said today.
Highlighting the facilities for bus passengers in a discussion
organised by the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce (HCC), he said
among the new plans for the MTC were to introduce air-conditioned
air link coaches, improve early morning trips, increase the
number of stand conductors, introduce improvements in bus design
like power steering, synchronised gear box to reduce fatigue of
drivers and bring down the number of accidents and breakdowns.
Other plans include providing inter-nodal transit facilities to
the Koyambedu bus service terminal and railway stations and more
vestibule and double-decker buses.
Complaints on the MTC's functioning could be made on phone at the
Passenger Complaint Cell - 5385566 and 5385454, he said. As a
result of welfare measures, conductor training programmes and
Yoga classes, collection in April touched Rs. 1.21 crores, he
said.
The MTC also proposed to provide facilities like low-floor modern
buses conforming to Euro norms on pollution control, air-
conditioned buses on select routes, feeder routes to MRTS, pre-
paid ticketing, operation details on the website, day saver and
family saver tickets, vacation special card, smart card similar
to that in Mumbai and construction of multi-storeyed parking lots
from where buses can pick up those who travel by car to their
workplaces.
Mr. Kirtykant P. Shah, Chairman, Expert Committee on
Communication and Transport, HCC, said the seat on the mud-guard
in central entrance buses was inconvenient and the foot board in
several buses was so high that the elderly persons, women and
children found it difficult to board. Instead of one long
journey, the MTC could provide more shuttle services, he
suggested.
Mr. Kantilal Kamdar, president, HCC, said compared to the
functioning of transport corporations in other States, the MTC
was perhaps the best. He gave away 10 first-aid kits to the MTC.
Mr. N. Tarachand Dugar, vice-president, outlined the activities
of the chamber.
