I live for people's welfare: Jayalalitha
By M. Balaganessin
CUDDALORE, MAY 2. The AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha,
today said she had dedicated her life to the promotion of
people's welfare. She was addressing an election meeting in
Bhuvanagiri in Cuddalore district, one of the four constituencies
where her nomination papers were rejected.
Ms. Jayalalitha was accorded a reception by a large gathering of
voters, especially women, who had waited for more than four
hours.
(Bhuvanagiri has become a seat of prestige for the AIADMK,
because the party's official candidate, Mr. Karunanidhi's papers
were also rejected on the ground that the candidate had failed to
submit Forms A and B issued by the party authorising the
candidature. Consequently, the party was forced to support an
Independent, Mr. P. S. Arul, an AIADMK sympathiser.)
``I live for you and for your welfare'', she said, listing what
she called the ``corrupt practices of the DMK Government''.
The Chief Minister, Mr. Karunanidhi, had warned the four
Returning Officers of `dire consequences', if they accepted her
nomination papers, she said. She tried to contest the four seats
of Krishnagiri, Andipatti, Bhuvanagiri and Pudukottai to prove
that false cases had been foisted on her and to reveal the misuse
of power by the ruling party. He forced the Returning Officers to
reject her papers. But he forgot the fact that people were the
real judges in a democracy, she remarked.
Ms. Jayalalitha said ``I have been a major hurdle in
Mr.Karunanidhi's resolution to make Mr. Stalin Chief Minister''.
In keeping with the agricultural background of the district, she
said that the DMK rule had dashed the farmers' hopes. ``It is the
people, who can put an end to the DMK rule'', she said.
