KOLKATA, MAY 2. Veteran CPI(M) leader, and a former Minister in West Bengal's Left Front government, Bhavani Mukherjee, died at a hospital here today following a prolonged illness, party sources said. He was 84 and is survived by a son and a daughter.

A veteran freedom fighter, Bhavani Mukherjee also participated in the movement to free Chandernagore from French rule.

Mukherjee, who was given membership of the Communist Party of India in 1937, later became Mayor of Chandernagore. He was also elected to the Assembly several times and became a Minister in the Left Front government.

Condoling Mukherjee's death, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee described him as a leader of the left democratic movement in Hooghly district who dedicated himself for the welfare of the people.
