Kalmadi for IAAF Presidentship
NEW DELHI, MAY 2. Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, President of the Asian
Amateur Athletic Association (AAAA) and the Amateur Athletic
Federation of India (AAFI), has filed his nomination for the
President's post in the International Amateur Athletic Federation
(IAAF).
Though no elections were due at the IAAF Congress to be held in
Edmonton on August 1 and 2, just prior to the World
championships, the death of Mr. Primo Nebiolo, in November, 1999,
had necessitated the election to the post of President. In case
the candidate to be eventually elected was to be a vice-president
or a Council member, elections will also be held for these
positions.
Mr. Kalmadi, who is also the President of the Indian Olympic
Association (IOA), has also filed his papers for the posts of
vice-president and Council member. The deadline for nominations
was April 30. Three others had filed their nominations for the
presidentship - the acting president, Mr. Lamine Diack of
Senegal, Mr. Eisa Abdullah Al-Dashti of Kuwait and Mr. Amada
Francis of Peurto Rico. However, Mr. Francis later withdrew his
nomination in favour of Mr. Diack.
For the vice-president's post, there are five others, apart from
Mr. Kalmadi, in the fray, including the double Olympic champion
Alberto Juantorena of Cuba, and Korean Park Jung-Ki, one of the
current Council members.
