Talk peace

Sir, - This is with reference to the news item `Shabir Shah ready to join peace process' (May 1). The ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir is not an end in itself. It is a means to achieve long- lasting peace. At this stage, the NDA Government must take the bold initiative of talking to Gen. Musharraf.

Our bitter experience with the Lahore bus trip should not make us rigid in our approach. Let us accept that a solution to the issue cannot be found without talking to Pakistan. Delegates from India, Pakistan and the Hurriyat should hold a conference to find a peaceful solution to the issue. The Hurriyat should also keep an open mind.

Sushil Mehra,

Bangalore
