Traffic regulation led to chaos
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, MAY 2.
An unannounced traffic regulation implemented on a trial basis by
the Police on Wednesday evening on the Duraiswamy Road junction
to ease traffic congestion, led to a severe jam of vehicles, as
the motorists were caught unawares.
The police said it would not be continued as it required further
study. Traffic coming from Ashok Nagar side was diverted via
Brindavan St- Thambiah Road towards Kodambakkam from 6 p.m. to 7
p.m., when the volume of traffic doubled in T.Nagar area.
Today's measure led to snarl-ups in large areas of West Mambalam
during the evening rush hour.
A long term solution would be the construction of a subway at
Rangarajapuram. The voters in this constituency have been
demanding that the contestants for the T.Nagar seat declare their
support to the pending project, which would ease the traffic
problem in the Kodambakkam bridge and the Duraiswamy subway.
It may be recalled that the Madley subway, which also connects
T.Nagar with West Mambalam, has been practically useless ever
since it opened, because of the lack of approach roads on the
Western side. Land would have to be acquired, but no political
party has shown the will to undertake this exercise, the
residents say.
