Support secular parties, Christians told

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDALORE, APRIL 30. The Catholic Association of Pondicherry- Cuddalore Archdiocese has appealed to Christians to exercise their franchise in support of secular parties.

A resolution was adopted at the forum's executive meeting held in Pondicherry on Sunday.

Releasing a copy of resolutions to presspersons here today, Mr. P. Dominic Savio, President of the forum, said the meeting specifically referred to the ``anti-Christian strategy being adopted by the Bharathiya Janata Party'' and appealed to the Christians to be wary of anti-secular parties.

Another resolution, however, urged the Christians to support Christian candidate, above party affiliations.

Fr. Mathew Nellikunnam presided over the meeting.

Villupuram

The Villupuram Consumer Protection Council planned to launch street-corner meetings in Villupuram town to impress upon the voters the need to exercise their franchise.

Mr. A. Noor Ahamad, its president, said the forum had also planned to resort to wall-paintings with a view to creating an awareness in this regard.

Candidates of various parties contesting from Villupuram constituency would be invited to address a public meeting and to explain to the electorate their programmes for the people's welfare on being returned from the constituency.

Chidambaram

Mr. C.D. Appavu, Secretary of the Consumer Guild of Tamilnadu, appealed to the voters, especially those in the urban and semi- urban pockets, to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming election to Assembly.

Appreciating the introduction of the electronic voting machines for this election, Mr. Appavu said neutral voters, not owing allegiance to any political party, had a greater responsibility this time.

Meanwhile, the district administration made arrangements for the video demonstration on the use of electronic voting machines in Kothattai and Silambimangalam villages on May 1, Manikollai, Villianalloor and Velangipattu villages on May 2.
