Documentaries on voters' attitude to elections

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 30.Two documentaries on people's attitude to the Assembly elections have a gloomy footage of the voters' mood, with many perceiving the exercise to be futile.

The first documentary, `Election 2001', interviewed voters in and around Chennai. Many said they would not exercise their franchise as they had lost trust in elections.

Others, who wanted a change in the political scenario, said they would vote for a third party or an Independent than for the two leading parties.

Overwhelmingly, the voters wanted a good leader who would deliver the goods, whichever party he belonged to, but were not sure who that would be. They complained that they did not have the right alternatives. One of the interviewees said he would vote for the best man. Asked who that would be, he paused and said, ``I don't know.''

The documentary's thrust was to stress on the importance of voting, said the director Mr.R. Pasumai Kumar. ``It tells voters that they should not refrain from the ballot, but vote after evaluating the alternatives before them.''

The second documentary, `Democratic Park', discussed the democratic norms involved in elections and the people's faith in them. Politicians, journalists and `election experts' were also interviewed in both documentaries, which were previewed at the Don Bosco Institute of Communication Arts on Sunday.
