TMC leader writes to EC
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 27. Mr. V. Balaji, MLA and president of the
State unit of the TMC, said here on Thursday that a detailed
report had been sent by fax to the Election Commission bringing
to its notice the `unjustified' rejection of the nomination of
the party candidate Mr. P. Moorthy, who was sought to be fielded
in Oussudu (reserved) constituency.
He alleged that the rejection was done on the ground that Mr.
Moorthy was a migrant Scheduled Caste (from Tamil Nadu) and hence
did not satisfy the Pondicherry Scheduled Caste Order 1964, to be
eligible to contest the poll in Pondicherry. Mr. Balaji said it
was really surprising that the election authorities had first
approved of his nomination on Wednesday but all of a sudden, a
notice was served on Mr. Moorthy asking why his nomination should
not be rejected.
Mr. Moorthy was an MLA from the same constituency in 1980 (as a
member of the DMK then) and had unsuccessfully contented the poll
in 1990 as Independent.
Sufficient details should have been given prior to filing of
nominations, Mr. Balaji said, and added the court of law would be
moved in this regard.
The CPM leader Mr. T. Murugan also said that the rejection of
nomination of Ms. V. Santhi in Oussudu (reserved) constituency
was not justified. He said legal remedy would be sought in this
regard.
