Dingko's wrist still a worry

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 23. Bantamweight pugilist Ng. Dingko Singh is yet to recover from the wrist injury he has been carrying for long, and has been forced to keep away from the National camp in Shimla. Therefore the chances of him making it to the Indian team for the World championship look bleak.

``He (Dingko) will be allowed to participate in the camp only after he produces a fitness certificate,'' Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) sources said here on Monday. Services boxer Gurcharan Singh is also unwell and has not reported for the camp.

Other prominent boxers including Ramanand, Jitender Kumar, Mohammed Ali Qamar, Harpal Singh, Narendra Rana and Praveen Kumar are attending the camp which started on April 16.

A four-member team is expected to be selected for the World championship to be held in Belfast, Ireland from June 1 to 11.

Meanwhile, quite surprisingly, the boxing calendar for the year 2001 has not yet been finalised. Normally the calendar is prepared during the Annual General Meeting of the Federation.

For the first time, the IABF is organising a camp for women boxers in Bangalore from May 1. India is preparing for the Asian championship and the World championship scheduled in the U.S. in November.

The regular summer camps for junior and sub-junior boxers are also scheduled to start on May 1. For the sub-junior pugilists, camps are simultaneously starting at four venues - Guwahati, Calcutta, Bangalore and Shilaroo (Himachal Pradesh), while the juniors would be camping at Shilaroo.
