Red Cross blood bank to be opened shortly in Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
NIZAMABAD, APRIL 23. The chairperson of the Indian Red Cross
Society, State branch and wife of the Governor, Dr. Haripriya
Rangarajan, said the blood bank being established in Hyderabad by
the Red Cross society would be inaugurated next month.
The bank coming up at a cost of Rs. 2 crores would be beneficial
as a large number of Red Cross members were donating blood at the
camps. The hospital would cater to the needs of the patients
suffering from thalasemia, she said adding that the blood bank
would be inaugurated by the Governor, Dr. C.Rangarajan. The
senior most member of the society, Mr. Saraswati Rao, had donated
a building to house the blood bank, she informed.
Dr. Haripriya Rangarajan was addressing the executive committee
meeting of the Indian Red Cross society, district branch, here on
Monday. She said her attention was also drawn to the plight of
the disabled persons which prompted her to organise a special
medical camp for them where Jaipur foot was provided to the
needy. She said her plans of starting a hospital where artificial
foot would be provided had fructified as several former students
of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, where the
Governor was a professor, now staying here had come forward to
generously contribute to the project.
Exhorting the youth to join the Red Cross movement, she said that
shortly the Junior Red Cross is being set up and soon a GO is
being issued which would enable students and youth to become
active members of the Red Cross. Nevertheless, Junior Red Cross
activities are on in 22 schools in the State, she pointed out.
She called upon the district branch members to extend the
activities of the Red Cross to the rural areas too.
The chairman of the district branch and District Collector, Mr.
Shashank Goel, briefed the members about the activities taken up
last year.
The Superintendent of police, Dr. Ravi Shankar Ayyanar, the Joint
Collector, Mr. A.Koteswara Rao, senior district officials and
members of the Red Cross were present.
Earlier, Dr. Haripriya Rangarajan visited the Government primary
school at Phulong in the town, which has been adopted by the
district branch of the Red Cross society. She expressed
satisfaction on knowing that the school which was plagued by
problems till six months ago now had become a model school with
all the facilities.
She offered to provide school uniforms to the 80 odd students of
the school and asked the district branch to make arrangement for
supply of another pair to the students. She appealed to the
people to contribute liberally to the Red Cross activities.
Later, Dr. Haripriya visited the temple town of Basar in
neighbouring Adilabad district yesterday night. She offered
prayers at the temple this morning and also performed `Akshara
Abhyasam' of her granddaughter.
