A dream fulfilled
THE ARTICLE "It's sampradaya unlimited", which appeared in the
Metroplus, April 5, is indeed a commendable effort. This set me
thinking about its origin.
My mother Savitri Rajan, a direct disciple of the legendary Veena
Dhanammal, taught veena to Michel Nixon. She wanted to document
Sampradaya music for posterity, lest it completely disappears
from the scene.
She shared the idea with Nixon, who decided to do something about
it. Ludwig Pesch, another musician, also joined in. Initially,
there were only five keen participants, including my mother and
me, and we held classes at my place. The Max Mueller Bhavan
offered some space, and soon more music-minded people joined.
In the beginning, we worked as a small, close-knit family. Then,
it grew in stature, gained momentum and popularity. It served its
purpose and proved very useful for lovers of Carnatic music, old
and young.
I am very happy to see my mother's pet venture blossom into what
it has become today. I do hope her spirit will smile with
satisfaction and pleasure.
