Confusing teen times

HAMSINI RAVI

This is dedicated to my classmates: without them I don't think I could have had all these experiences.

Being 13 stinks most of the time, but that is only because you have to learn to keep up the blend between your school work and your social life. In addition, it is also because you are either too young for certain things or too old for other things. But sometimes being 13 is cool. People trust you more. Your parents vest more responsibilities with you and the coolest part is that you're allowed to stay up late.

Most of us are confused with our personalities. Well, have your feelings ever been like this: You're at school and one day decide to join the volleyball team, you've always had interest in sports and those long legs, you've never used them, you tell yourselves "this is the best time to utilised them, you tell yourself, "this is the best time to make use of my long legs". You enjoy volleyball practice and as you go back home, you actually think about streaking your hair into five different colours and the very next hour you fix up an appointment with a beauty parlour. You get your hair streaked. All your friends love your new hair and it is the talk of the class.

The next day while channel-surfing you pass Discovery Channel and stop there for some reason. There's a talk show going on and you see this interviewer in a middle school asking some children if they like animals and nature. They say yes they do and then the woman shows them a picture of green scenery with lots of plants, animals and the date marked 2001. Then she shows them another picture with trees with hardly any leaves and the animals are all very thin and frail and the people and with oxygen cylinders and the date marked 2057.

She tells them that if they do not want this to happen they better start doing something. You are convinced.

The next day at volleyball practice you find yourself with green, red, blue, orange and red hair and with a T-shirt that says "I love green". You are confused, so you just quit volleyball and come home.

Isn't that an amazing, confusing story? Well, all people say is that it's all part of growing up, but you can just solve this problem with time. However, I guess, by the time people are 19 they actually identify their own real interests and hobbies. It is amazing how six years ago you were doing eight different things and then by the time you reach 19 those eight things simplify to two.

Then younger teens are worried about turning into nerds. Life is tough. You have to learn to live through all those years.

Like when you are in history class and you know history is super boring but your parents have promised you a mountain bike if you get high marks. So you try your best to listen to the teacher, and then you actually get involved in the lesson, you get so involved that your friend has to kick you twice in the shins to make you look at the note he has just passed, you read the note (it's about a party your friends is planning to have this weekend). You try to think about the food he plans to have but your thoughts are slipping back to Akbar and his agricultural policies. You almost jump up in shock: "What's this , you're into history." You grin sheepishly and tell your friend he should have tacos instead of pizza!!

I know that being 13 is tough at times and you'll have to cope with those 'look at her hogging the phone' comments (it's specially embarrassing if your live in a full house).

So, have a great time being a teen. Believe me, it's kind of weird and hard to believe but it's one of the best time of a person's life - You're on the road to becoming an adult.
