One killed in multiple collision

CHENNAI, APRIL 6. One person died and nine others, including seven passengers travelling in a share autorickshaw, sustained injuries in a multiple collision involving two autorickshaws, a milk van and a two-wheeler on the East Coast Road, Tiruvanmiyur, on Friday.

Police identified the deceased as Arumugam (53) of Palavakkam working in Anna University.

Police said the share autorickshaw, carrying seven passengers, was on its way to Palavakkam around 3 p.m., with another autorickshaw alongside. At the Muttukadu Road-Tirumudi Vinayakar Koil Street junction, a milk van coming in the opposite direction attempted to overtake the two-wheeler and hit the autorickshaws and the two-wheeler.

In the mishap, the share autorickshaw and the milk van overturned. Luckily no one was travelling in the regular autorickshaw, police said.

The injured were identified as Mr. Thanigaimani, a constable attached to Tamil Nadu Special Police, Mr. Kamalakar Rao of Palavakkam, Mr. Prakash and his wife Ms. Pushpa of Kottivakkam, Ms. Pyojohn of Palgalai Nagar, Palavakkam, Ms. Geetha of Kottivakkam, Mr. Velu, Mr. Gurusamy and the autorickshaw driver Mr. Rajkumar. All of them were admitted to a private hospital.

The van driver fled the scene fearing attack by residents, police added.
