'CBI should probe Menaka murder'
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, APRIL 6. The Tamil Nadu Federation of Women Panchayat
Presidents has demanded a CBI enquiry into the murder of the
Urapakkam woman panchayat president.
Ms. Menaka, president of the Urapakkam panchayat, was murdered by
a four-member gang in her office on March 29.
The federation wanted the CBI probe to unearth the `political
nexus' among real estate agents, the ruling party and the police.
It also wanted the State Government to order a compensation of
Rs.10 lakhs to the victim's family. Only one of the five persons
who surrendered in connection with the murder had been at the
scene of crime, the federation said.
One prime accused had taken shelter with a ruling party
functionary. The Guduvancheri police should be held responsible
for the murder, the federation demanded.
It also condemned the attitude of the Guduvancheri police which
failed to provide protection to Menaka despite repeated threats
from the mafia, even after complaints had been made.
