By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 5. Four persons, including a Sri Lankan Tamil, were arrested and three vehicles seized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) South Zone unit following the seizure of 15 kg of high grade heroin, worth Rs. 60 lakhs.

Police identified the arrested persons as Kasilingam, a Sri Lankan Tamil, Kamalakannan, Anbazhagan and Gheesulal.

Speaking to newspersons today, the NCB South Zone Director Mr. Shankar Jiwal, said the prime accused was the Sri Lankan Tamil. The contraband reached the city outskirts by a truck from Madhya Pradesh last evening. It was concealed in a secret cabin inside the diesel tank.

Based on a specific information, an NCB team intercepted the truck at Nazarathpet, near Poonamallee, when the heroin was being transferred. The consignment was bound for Sri Lanka.

Mr. Jiwal said Kasilingam was already involved in the case wherein 33 gold bars and 1.6 kg of heroin were seized by DRI at Chennai in 1993.

The arrested gang had been active during the past few months. The gang was trapped based on intelligence gathered over the past several months. Police are on the look out for some more persons in this connection.

During the past two years, the south zonal unit had seized about 185 kg of heroin worth over Rs. 184 crores and ten major drug trafficking syndicates have been neutralised, he added.
