2 undertrials escape on way to jail
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, APRIL 1. Two undertrials escaped from a KSRTC bus
after assaulting four police escorts with knives near Nelamangala
in Bangalore Rural District on Sunday.
Police said three undertrials were being brought back to Kolar
jail after producing them before a court in Bellary on Friday.
Two of them escaped. The three undertrials were wanted in 33
cases in Kolar and Bellary.
The names of the escaped undertrials were given as Raghunath
Reddy from Tadapatri of Cuddappah District in Andhra Pradesh and
Kumar from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. Anand, the other
undertrial, could not escape as he was ``handcuffed and
chained''.
The four policemen, Abdul Sattar, Chinnappa, Krishnaiah and
Ramappa, attached to the District Armed Reserved police, Kolar,
sustained knife injuries. They were admitted to Victoria Hospital
and Minto Hospital in the City. Abdul Sattar's condition is said
to critical.
Police said that the undertrials attacked policemen with knives
when they were sleepy in the early hours. This led to a
commotion, and the driver stopped the bus near Nelamangala. The
two undertrials jumped out of the bus and escaped.
However, Chinnappa said that the incident occurred at about 4
a.m. The undertrials attacked them with knives after throwing
chilli powder into their eyes.
However, it was not known how the undertrials managed to carry
knives. It was also not known why the two undertrials were not
``handcuffed and chained'', and the reason for the delay in
bringing them back to Kolar though they were produced before the
court in Bellary on Friday.
Police said that the incident was a ``clear case of negligence''
on the part of the police escorts.
Alert sounded
Police said that a State-wide alert had been sounded, and their
counterparts in Cuddapah and Chittoor had been alerted about the
incident.
The three undertrials were wanted in cases of murder, robbery and
dacoity. Most of the cases were reported from Kolar, police said.
A case has been registered in Nelamangala police station.
