dated March 29, 1951: Gen. MacArthur's truce offer
The Korean tangle was taking a curious turn with the truce offer
made by General MacArthur. The British were shocked by the offer
and the Daily Herald said that the anxiety felt about the Thirty-
Eighth Parallel was not reduced by Gen. MacArthur's comments.
News Chronicle declared that while the United Nations forces were
``bumping uneasily'' against the 38th Parallel, General MacArthur
had issued another of his ``tactless pronouncements''. The paper
added. ``The time has surely come when someone in America should
pluck up sufficient courage to tell this gallant but ageing
soldier that he has earned a rest''.
General MacArthur created a sensation - though not for the first
time - when he announced that as his forces had reached the
Thirty-Eighth Parallel and shown their military superiority to
the Chinese North Korean forces, he was ready to receive a truce
offer from the enemy. Plunging deeper into polities, he had
asserted that there was no reason to link the Korean question
with Formosa or the admission of China to the United Nations.
This statement had been promptly repudiated in Washington.
Propaganda against Tito
Reuter's monitoring station in London reported that Cominform
propaganda organs had issued a new call to the 15 million people
of Yugoslavia to overthrow Marshal Tito's Government, on March
27. A radio barrage calling for a ``revolt'' was beamed into
Yugoslavia from Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, on the occasion of
the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the rising against
the Nazis.
