Jewellery, cash stolen

CHENNAI, MARCH 28. Burglars struck in different places in the city and escaped with 40 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs.2.8 lakhs.

According to police, the culprits gained entry into the house of an advocate at AVM Avenue in Virugambakkam today when the inmates were asleep. They broke open the almirah and took away about 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery and some cash. Two other incidents of burglaries were also reported in the same area.

In another incident, culprits entered into the house of an auditor at Rajamannar Street in T.Nagar and escaped with over 20 sovereigns of jewels and silk sarees. There was also a break-in at a shop at Pondy Bazaar. The intruders managed to squeeze themselves into the shop in the space between the shutter and the steps.

About Rs.2 lakhs was reported missing from a lodge in Flower Bazaar area. The inmate had locked the room and had come down to make a telephone call and found the money stolen when he returned to the room.

In the fifth incident, about Rs.80,000 was reported stolen from the office of a building contractor at Mylapore. In another break-in about Rs.15,000 was reported stolen from a place of worship at JJ Nagar.
