Pak. may amend Constitution
By B. Muralidhar Reddy
ISLAMABAD, MARCH 28. The Pakistani Government decided to amend
the Constitution, if necessary.
The Cabinet, which met here today, endorsed ``steps for good
governance, political restructuring and constitutional amendments
if necessary''.
The meeting was presided over by the Chief Executive, Gen. Pervez
Musharraf. The decision assumes significance following Gen.
Musharraf's statements that the military Government would like to
make certain amendments to the Constitution to ensure that the
future setup does not annul its policy initiatives.
He has also been talking about the need to have greater powers to
the President. In an interview to Washington Times, Gen.
Musharraf had said that the President should not be a mere
figurehead.
An official statement today said that the amendments would be
made within the mandate given by the Pakistan Supreme Court to
the military regime.
They would be made only if absolutely necessary and keeping in
view the disastrous consequences of `impulsive' amendments in the
past.
