Cheerful tidings predicted for this year

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 26. What does the almanac (Panchangam) this year hold for the State and the people?

Only cheer, mostly. At least that is what the Official Language Council chairman, Dr.Madugula Nagaphani Sarma, says.

Explaining what is in store during the Vrisha Nama Samvatsaram at a Government-sponsored function to celebrate Ugadi, the Telugu New Year Day, here on Monday, the scholar said that copious rains would be the hallmark of the new year.

That is because the very word "Vrisha" meant so. Out of the nine `Nayakas' (the planets ruling the positions), seven were seen as `Shubha Nayakas' resulting in a problem of plenty at best.

There was good news in store for the dairy and agricultural sectors, fine arts, TV and business fields. The last one, of course, would be successful only if people were adept at it. He greeted farmers with the good news that they would get the right price for their products, particularly if the foodgrains were of black, white and pale red colour.

The Chief Minister, Mr.N.Chandrababu Naidu, and the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Mr.B.Dattatreya, could not help but smile when the scholar predicted better ties between the State and Central Governments. And that is because of "Brihaspati's influence", he pointed out.

There was, however, a bit of bad news too. He said `Kala Sarpa Dosham' prevailed in general and anyone doing `Gopuja or Sivapuja' would not be affected.

In response, the Chief Minister said that he believed in the predictions of the Panchangam as his experience showed that "except in one or two issues" it matched the happenings later.

Earlier, Dr.Nagaphani Sarma put to rest the controversy on the date of Ugadi. Referring to the two theories prevailing - Prachina and Drik Siddhantas - he said both were right.

"Science does not give two results, it is the interpreting scientists who do so. Likewise, panchangams too", he said.

He said the Central Government committee on such matters also relied on `Drik' Siddhanta which was strengthened later by the Kanchi Acharya too. This Siddhanta was better for the people and hence must be followed.

Accordingly, because there was still a bit of Amavasya on Sunday morning though `Paadyami' began on the day, it was advisable to celebrate Ugadi on Monday, he said.
