Govindacharya flays economic policies

NEW DELHI, MARCH 26. Senior BJP leader, Mr. K.N. Govindacharya, today attacked the Government's economic reforms saying they have ``compromised'' the national economic sovereignty and led to increase in rural poverty and shrinkage in job opportunities.

A day after BJP national executive rallied behind the Government's economic policies and the Union Budget, Mr. Govindacharya said reforms in the past five years ``have resulted in the increase of rural poverty worsening the plight of farmers, decrease in employment opportunities, skewed and disadvantageous work opportunities for women and less skilled youth.'' The path of free marketism in the last 15 years has ``led us to the blind alley of indiscriminate globalisation,'' said Mr. Govindacharya, on a sabbatical after being dropped as BJP general secretary for attacking Government's economic policies, in an open letter.
