Traders in Koyambedu market to down shutters on Mar. 28

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 24. Fruit traders in Koyambedu vegetable market have expressed dismay over the ``inaction of the CMDA officials'' to remove encroachments or improve facilities in the market area.

The fruit traders and commission agents have alleged that on March 22, a licensed trader's vehicle carrying perishables with an entry pass was seized by the CMDA officials and taken away to the office of the Chief Executive Officer. Such incidents were taking place frequently, despite protests, they said.

The CMDA had declared that if all the traders obtained license, it could evict the unauthorised and unlicensed shops. But even though the traders obtained such a license, the encroachers were not removed from the area. But any eviction operation only affected the licensed traders, they say.

Despite assurances in the past four years, the regulations that specified commodities could be sold only in specified locations, had not been implemented. And in the past four years roads, water supply, power supply had not improved. Garbage removal was being done at 6 a.m. and the traders want it to be removed in the noon time.

The associations of the fruit traders and commission agents have said the shops would down shutters for a day on March 28, to highlight their grievances and to condemn ``the highhandedness of the authorities''.
