Cong. intention not clear: Surjeet

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MARCH 19. The CPI(M) general secretary, Mr. Harkishan Singh Surjeet, has termed as unconvincing the Congress declaration that it is ready to ally with other parties to form an alternative to the BJP-led NDA Government. Mr. Surjeet, here to inaugurate the EMS Academy, told The Hindu today in an interview that the Congress was yet to prove its sincerity in forging an alliance with other secular parties to defeat the BJP. Without saying it in so many words, Mr. Surjeet indicated that his party did not wish to be seen as rushing to welcome the Congress declaration as the CPI had done.

The CPI(M) leader said this was not the first time the Congress had come out with such statements, but its subsequent actions had not suggested any readiness to counter the threat posed by the rightist BJP. ``Of course, the Congress has come out of the old rut where they said they do not want to share power (with others). But how sincere are they?''
