I-T helpline inaugurated

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 7. An `Interactive Voice Response (helpline) System' to provide basic recorded information on income-tax and procedures through the telephone was inaugurated by the Chief Commissioner of Income tax (AP), Mr. C.V. Padmanabhan, at the `Aayakar Bhavan' here on Wednesday.

The interactive system developed by a private firm also provides statutory and non-statutory forms to the assessees through the fax machines upon request. Such a system was in vogue in cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

By dialing phones -- 3242627 or 3242646, the customer can get access to the information he seeks in three languages of English, Hindi and Telugu. The details of tax rates, 1/6th scheme, forms to be used for filing returns, applications for permanent account number, deductions, rebates and benefits applicable, etc., could be accessed through a telephone.

Mr. Padmanabhan said the department gets many calls seeking proper information and installation of this facility could save the time of the employee as well as the customer. Pointing out that there was a lack of awareness on the IT procedures, the Chief Commissioner hoped that the improved efficiency would help in widening the tax base and thereby, the revenues.
