Uttaranchal action groups sore

By Our Staff Correspondent

ALMORA, MARCH 5. About three dozen action groups under the umbrella of the Uttarakhand Samanvya Samiti (USS) have decided to merge into a single political party soon.

Announcing this after a two-day meeting of the USS, Dr Shamsher Singh Bisht, Mr Rajiv Lochan Sah, Mr Rajendra Dhasmana and others said that brainstorming sessions at various places in Garhwal and Kumaon had revealed that the people were more interested in rapid development of their areas rather than big talk indulged in by the BJP politicians ruling the State.

The constitution and manifesto of the new party was being prepared and would soon be made public. One thing is for sure that this party would lay more stress on development and crusade for the commonman rather than stress on votes, Dr Shamsher Singh Bisht said.

In a scathing attack on the Swami government the USS leaders wanted the Chief Minister to resign before the public took to the streets demanding justice. The Chief Minister had bowed before the liquor mafia instead of throwing it out as announced by him. ``Are such announcements before a surrender to be taken as helplessness of the Chief Minister or allegations of corruption against his close relatives to be believed,'' a number of USS leaders wanted to know.

Dr Bisht wanted a high level probe into the corruption and diversion of government funds by some senior IAS officers to the NGO called Centre for Development Studies (CDS) which had been shifted from the premises of the Administrative Training Institute, Naini Tal, to the State Secretariat in Dehra Dun. Similarly huge funds had been siphoned off in the name of Joint Forest Management and Swajal, he said adding that the new party would crusade against the corrupt politicians and officials and stress on developing a network of local entrepreneurs who could take up production and marketing of value added products besides setting up small ventures which did not harm the ecology of the hills.
