A helping hand
REPUBLIC DAY, 2001. A day that will go down in history as India's
tryst with Destiny. The day the nation witnessed one of its worst
calamities ever - the Gujarat earthquake. The tremors have since
ceased but the trauma doesn't seem to have an end in sight.
Where there was prosperity there is ruin now. People are out on
the streets bearing the heat of the day and the frosty bite of
the night without a roof over their heads or food for survival.
Schools and other buildings have been reduced to quiet masses of
non-speaking rubble. All they need now is a heart that cares and
a hand that gives. And who better than the student community of
our country to come forward and provide help at the crucial hour.
Seven of the leading colleges of Chennai, have gotten together to
contribute their mite for the cause. The colleges -Women's
Christian College, Stella Maris, Ethiraj, MOP Vaishnav, IIT-
Madras, Loyola and Madras Christian College - have all joined
forces in association with e-pagemaker (a Chennai based e-
solutions provider) to present a fund-raising programme in aid of
the victims of the Gujarat calamity.
"March 2 Gujarat", an evening of dance and music, is happening on
March 2, 2001, from 6.00 p.m. onwards at the OAT, IIT-Chennai.
The event is being organised and managed by the group of Chennai
colleges.
The Association for India's Development (AID)-Chennai Chapter is
working in collaboration with the students to organise "March 2
Gujarat". All proceeds from this event will be used for
reconstruction and rehabilitation work in Gujarat.
For the connoisseurs of music, get set to enjoy the acoustics
performed by WCC, Stella and MCC. There is light music by
Ethiraj, MCC, WCC and IIT, Western music by MCC and WCC. Students
of MOP, Ethiraj, Stella and Loyola will dance to Western beats,
while MCC students will sway the Tibetan way. Set your mind to
the contemporary dance by MOP or mix 'n' dance with WCC's Fusion.
Journey into the villages of India, with a folk dance by WCC or
enjoy the deep rooted Indian culture with a classical dance
performance by Stella Maris.
Tickets are priced at Rs. 40 and Rs. 75 and are available at
Landmark, Connexions (Anna Nagar), Odyssey (Adyar), Music World
(Spencer Plaza), Qwiky's (Nungambakkam), Fruit Shop (Egmore) and
with the cultural secretaries of the various colleges.
