CHENNAI'S FAMOUS landmark is on the cybermap. Not on websites,
which already abound, but in offering access to the Internet, to
the rail traveller. The Central Station has acquired the unique
of distinction of offering the `first internet business centre',
at a railway junction in the country.
The bank of Pentium III computers and flatscreen LCD monitors was
inaugurated by the Southern Railway General Manager, Mr. Ajit
Kishore. ``The browsing centre is yet another communication
network provided at Chennai Central, apart from STD and ISD and
cell phone hire facilities. The new service will help the
travelling public to keep in touch with the outside world while
they are on the move,'' he said.
The centre has 27 Dell computers with the flat screen monitors,
besides scanner and printer facility. It will run on a 2 Mb
leased line connection and will be backed up by a 64 Kbps ISDN
line.
Browsing for short duration will be allowed, says DishnetDSL
vice-president, Mr. Charles Chacko, and the tariff is in slabs of
Rs. 10, 20 and 30.
Central's new status should not come as a surprise, considering
that the Internet kiosk revolution began in Chennai.
