BJP files police complaint against CPI leader
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, FEB. 21. Mr. Ragu Sundararaman, secretary of the
Pondicherry unit of the BJP told newsmen here today that a
complaint has been lodged with the police by party president, Mr.
A. M. Krishnamoorthy against the CPI secretary, Mr. N.
Kalainathan for `assaulting` the BJP leader earlier in the day
near a kalyana mandapam at Pakkamodayanpet.
Mr. Sundararaman said that he and his party colleagues had in the
meanwhile also complained to the Lt. Governor and IG of police
against the `attempt' of the CPI leaders and the MLA of that
party to `politicise' government schemes.
Though the cyclone relief amount was distributed by the Revenue
Department the CPI volunteers thronged the venue with party
banners, flags and pictures of the MLA giving the impression that
the party was the benefactor.
When the BJP men protested this they were allegedly attacked by
CPI men. Following the incident the BJP leaders squatted on the
road, when police took them into custody. Later all those
arrested, including the BJP president, Mr. Krishnamoorthy were
released.
Mr. K. Lakshminarayanan, president of the Puduchery Makkal
Congress (PMC) condemned the alleged assault on Mr.
Krishnamoorthy, when the BJP leader and his men were peacefully
protesting against the CPI`s `politicisation' of a government
function.
However, Mr. Kalainathan, CPI state committee secretary, and Mr.
T. Murugan, CPI(M) district committee secretary, in a joint
statement charged the BJP with causing disruption at the
government function.
The two leaders said that it was the practice in Pondicherry that
whenever any assistance was given to the people, the legislator
of the respective constituency should be present. It was in
keeping with this that Mr. Viswanathan, the CPI MLA, was present
at the kalyana mandapam at Pakkamodayanpet.
