A plea for conciliation

Sir, - This is with reference to the article ``An appeal for conciliation on Ayodhya'' by Mr. M. Ramakrishnayya (TheHindu, Feb. 13). The learned writer has a vast experience of administration at top level and a good record of yeoman service to the betterment of inter-community relations through dialogue. The suggestion for conciliation on the Ayodhya issue invokes noble- heartedness. His conclusion that ``neither the reconstruction of the demolished mosque nor the construction of temple at that very site is likely to bring peace and harmony'' seems reasonable.

If this is so, let the protagonists of the Ram temple construct it away from the site at which the Babri Masjid stood till December 6, 1992. The Muslim community may be requested to defer the reconstruction of the mosque till the courts declare their verdict on the several cases about the rights of property of the site of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya, and the unlawful demolition of the mosque, etc. If a conciliation proceeding is necessary for solving this stalemate, it should be preferred through a court of law and the parties concerned should guarantee to safeguard the site of the Babri Masjid till the courts give a final verdict. As a symptom of conciliation the makeshift temple at the rubble of the demolished mosque should be removed.
