Woman tonsured for failure to provide dowry

By Our Staff Reporter

HOSUR, FEB. 18. A woman's head was tonsured and her tongue branded with an iron rod in a dowry related problem at Santhiranallur near Dharmapuri recently. Four persons including the father-in-law and the mother-in-law of the woman were arrested in this connection, on Saturday.

Police said Pushpa was married to Shanmugam of Santhiranallur five years ago. But the failure of the former's parents to provide 2.5 sovereigns of jewellery, as agreed upon during the wedding, had led to her harassment. Subsequently, castigating her of having an illegal relationship with another person, she was taken to Sekkarapatti, where her head was tonsured on February 12. From there, she was brought to Santhiranallur where her tongue was branded with an iron rod ``on religious grounds'' and was also paraded around the temple.
