Criminal shot dead in encounter
MUMBAI, FEB.17. A notorious criminal was shot dead in an
encounter with police at Airoli flyover bridge off eastern
express highway in north-east Mumbai last night.
Police said they had laid a trap in the area after receiving a
tip-off that Shekhar alias Nagesh Nayanar, wanted in connection
with 18 offences, would come to the area. Shekhar was asked to
surrender when spotted in the area. However, he fired at the
police team, police said. Police returned the fire in self-
defence, seriously injuring the criminal. He was rushed to nearby
Rajawadi hospital but was pronounced dead before admission,
police added.
Police have recovered a foreign-made revolver with one live
cartridge and four empty cartridges from the spot.
