'Major role for residents' associations
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 17. The residents' associations play a
major role in keeping the city clean and green, mainly by taking
up public awareness programmes, the Mayor, Prof. J. Chandra, has
said.
She was inaugurating a seminar on the topic, `Clean city,
beautiful city', organised jointly by the Maitri Nagar Residents'
Association and the State Forest Department in the Forest
Headquarters here today.
Issues such as garbage processing, maintenance of hygiene,
protection of the environment and water sources, checking
atmospheric pollution, etc., were discussed. The aim of the
seminar was to suggest ways to improve public cooperation in
environment protection and cleanliness programmes.
The Mayor said the suggestions evolving from the seminar would
be studied and implemented in a time-bound manner. As many as six
papers were presented at the seminar.
The Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman, Mr. K.C.
Vikraman, chaired the seminar. The Principal Chief Conservator of
Forest, Mr. P.K. Surendranathan Asari, also spoke.
