Steps to professionalise coop. sector on: Minister
By Our Staff Reporter
KANNUR, FEB. 17. The Co- operation and Electricity Minister, Mr.
S. Sarma, today said that the Government would expedite steps to
professionalise the co- operative sector with the objective of
equipping it to meet new challenges.
Inaugurating a State-level deposit mobilisation drive in the co-
operative credit sector here, the Minister said the Government
had already decided to constitute a recruitment examination board
in the co-operative sector aimed at introducing professionalism.
The decision to form an independent election commission to hold
elections to co-operative bodies was also taken to ensure free
and fair polls, he said.
He stated that urgent measures were needed to enable the co-
operative credit societies to deal with the crisis. He said the
opening of many engineering colleges in the co-operative sector
in different parts of the State could be cited as an example of
how effectively the surplus funds were utilised to meet the
urgent requirements in the higher education sector. More
professional colleges in the sector would be started soon, he
added.
Mr. Sarma said the deposit mobilisation campaigns had helped
popularise the co-operative sector. In this period of financial
problems in the State, the success of the drive was important, he
added.
