Akademi Fellowship, awards announced

THRISSUR, FEB. 17. Mr O V Vijayan, writer, has been selected for
the prestigious Kerala Sahithya Akademi Fellowship for 2000. The
Academy has selected Prof M Krishnan Nair, critic, for its award
for his total contribution to Malayalam literature.
While the fellowship carries a purse of Rs 20,000, a gold medal
of two sovereigns, shawl and a plaque, the award carries a cash
prize of Rs 10,000, citation and a plaque.
The General Council of the Akademi, which met here today with the
president, Mr M T Vasudevan Nair, in the chair, approved the list
of other award winners of the year.
They are: Mr C V Balakrishnan (Novel--Athmavinu Seriyennu
Thonnunna Karyangal), Mr Nilamberoor Madhusoodhanan Nair
(Poetry--Chamatha), Mr Karivelloor Murali (Play--Che Guera), Ms
Gracy (Short story collection--Randu Swapnadarsikal), Dr C
Rajendran (Literary criticism--Padavum Porulum), Dr D Babu Paul
(Informatics Literature--Vedasabdaratnakaram), Mr V R
Krishnanezhuthachan (Biography/Autobiography--V R
Krishnanezhuthachan--Aatmakatha), Prof K Sachidanandan
(Travelogue--Pala Lokam, Pala Kalam), Mr Krishna Poojappura
(Humourous Literature--Kali Kolam) and Ms Leela Sarkar
(Translation--Manasa Vasudha).
The awards carry a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each, a citation,
ponnada and a plaque.
The akademi has also announced the various Endowment Awards for
the year and the winners are: Mr Kiliroor Radhakrishnan (Sree
Padmanabha Swamy Prize for Children's literature), Dr S J
Mangalam (I C Chacko Memorial Award for Linguistics, Grammar and
Science Studies), Dr P N Das (C B Kumar Award for Essays), Dr
Dharmaraj Adatt (K R Namboodiri Award for Writings on Veda), Mr
Anvar Ali (Kanakasree Award for Poetry), Dr Raghavan Payyanad (G
N Pillai Award for Informatic Literature), Dr M R Raghava Varrier
(Kuttippuzha Award for Literary Criticism), and Mr Verghese
Panthallokkaran (Mumbai Nataka Vedi Award).
An akademi release said Mr G Sreekandan of Venjaramoodu in
Thiruvananthapuram has won this year's Thunjan Memorial Essay
Contest and Ms E R Sindhu of the Sree Krishna College, Guruvayur,
the C B Kumar Memorial Essay Contest.
The awards will be presented at the annual celebrations of the
Akademi in March.
