TMC 'assessing' partymen's mood

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, FEB. 12. While the TMC continues its hard bargaining with the AIADMK for a ``satisfactory package of seats'', the TMC's `extended' executive committee met here today to figure out the mood of the partymen on electoral alliance.

The TMC, it is understood, had pitched for 70 seats, while the AIADMK's offer ``is less than 40 seats''. As the TMC feels that the present offer ``is not satisfactory'', it is now negotiating for ``more seats''.

Meanwhile, a majority of the over 500 district functionaries, who presented their views to the party's election committee, is stated to have preferred an alliance with the AIADMK. However, the alliance should be based on ``respectable share of seats'', they insisted.

While the DMK option too was favoured by a few partymen, there were no takers for the third front proposal.

While the TMC president, Mr. G. K. Moopanar, held detailed discussions with the district presidents and MLAs, the party's election committee met the other district functionaries for a district-wise ``mood assessment''. The election panel is likely to present its report on the ``views of the partymen on alliance strategy'' to the party leadership tomorrow.

Barring the former Union Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram, all senior party leaders participated in today's meeting.
