Irate residents squat on the road

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, FEB. 10. Tension prevailed in Pulianthope on Saturday when irate residents of Kanigapuram squatted on the Dr. Ambedkar College Road demanding action against those behind the murder of a DMK functionary in the area.

The windscreen of an MTC bus was damaged by some miscreants. Traffic was disrupted in the area for about an hour from 9 a.m.

Normality was restored following the intervention of the police who persuaded the protestors to disperse after assuring that action would be taken against the culprits.

The murder occurred on Thursday when the DMK youth functionary, Lazarus, his father, Mr. Natesan were attacked by a gang near a tea shop at Kanigapuram. Lazarus succumbed to injuries, while Mr.

Natesan was admitted with cut injuries at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

Rumours that the condition of Mr. Natesan had worsened, sparked tension in the area this morning. Several local residents, including a large number of women, gathered on the road.

The residents also protested against ``misleading reports'' published in a section of the press in connection with the murder.

The Flower Bazaar DCP, Mr. Shakeel Akhter, who led a police team to the spot, pacified the crowd.

Mr. Akhter said the murder was a fall out of a long pending rivalry between two groups.

The assailants had been identified and a special team formed to arrest them, he said.

Meanwhile, authorities are concerned about the growing number of attacks on MTC buses. On Friday, three buses were damaged when a group of students went on the rampage in Arumbakkam and in an earlier incident, a bus was damaged by some miscreants in Aminjikarai.
