Vanniyar Nala Sangham backs AIADMK

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, FEB. 1. The Vanniyar Nala Sangham will support the AIADMK in the coming Assembly election, Mr. A. K. Natarajan, president of the Sangham, said today.

He told reporters that he met the AIADMK leader, Ms. Jayalalitha, last week and told her that his organisation be allotted seats. ``Our intention is that the voice of our community should be heard in the Assembly. So, we will accept any number of seats given to us and our candidates will contest the election on the AIADMK party symbol''.

Mr. Natarajan also presented her a set of demands, among which were the formation of a welfare board for the Vanniya community and provision of subsidised diesel to farmers as in the case of fishermen, in the event of the AIADMK capturing power.

Asked whether his organisation would remain with the AIADMK if the PMK was taken in, Mr. Natarajan said ``our support will continue, irrespective of the PMK joining hands with the AIADMK or not''.The Vanniyar Nala Sangham leader said he had apprehensions about the installation of a statue of Ramasamy Padayatchiar near Halda junction in the city. ``The Chief Minister did not refer to it in the interim budget whereas he announced that a memorial would be built for Azhagu Muthukone''.
