Quake relief: Ministers, Legislators offer one month's salary
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, FEB. 1. All Ministers and MPs/ MLAs belonging to the
Telugu Desam have announced one month's salary for the relief
effort in the quake- hit Gujarat. In addition, MPs have
sanctioned Rs. 10 lakhs each from the MPLADS funds.
In a similar gesture, all Government employees have agreed to
donate one day's earning for the cause, apart from offering to go
and help in the relief operations by the Gujarat Government.
Announcing this at a news conference here on Thursday, the Chief
Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, appealed to MPs, MLAs of
other political parties and people in general to contribute their
mite liberally for the quake victims. Contributions should be
only in cheque or draft in favour of `Chief Minister's relief
fund - Gujarat.' He was advising Telugu Desam Party functionaries
not to collect cash or kind, but only to motivate and facilitate
contributions. He thanked elected representatives, Government
employees and others for their gesture.
Mr. Naidu said the State Government released Rs. 5 crores
immediately even as the Commissioner for Relief, Mr. D. C.
Rosaiah, and the Additional DGP, Mr. M. L. Kumawath, flew to
Ahmedabad with doctors and relief supplies worth Rs. 67 lakhs.
The AP team was the first to reach the calamity-stricken State
and help in establishing communication link between Ahmedabad and
Bhuj and with other parts of Gujarat and India.
