EC announces further Rs 42 cr. aid
NEW DELHI, FEB. 1. The European Commission today announced a
further Euro 10 million (Rs. 42 crores) in humanitarian
assistance for the quake victims taking the total assistance of
member states of the European Union to Euro 48 million (Rs. 200
crores) so far.
The aid, managed by the humanitarian aid office (ECHO), will
provide more support for the ongoing relief effort with special
focus on badly affected smaller towns and remote areas where less
aid has been getting through, according to a release issued by
the EC information Service.
A team of 74 Russian rescuers have been carrying out operations
at Bachao while a team of Russian doctors is engaged in providing
emergency treatment to quake-hit people of Ahmedabad, a Russian
embassy release said.
Meanwhile, the Iranian embassy announced cancellation of its
function here on February 12 marking the anniversary of the
Islamic revolution due to the ``painful earthquake tragedy''.
