Collection of quake relief materials in full swing

PONDICHERRY, JAN. 31. The State unit of the BJP has decided to
collect garments and other materials from people to help the
victims of the killer quake in Gujarat. Mr. A.M. Krishnamoorthy,
president of the unit, told newsmen here today that a team of
party volunteers would visit houses and collect such materials on
February 4 and 5.
There will also be collection through hundis from donors,
particularly merchants. The collected amount will be sent to the
Prime Minister's Relief Fund. Expressing grief over the gruesome
earthquake, Mr. Krishnamoorthy requested the people to extend
their helping hand for the rescue and relief works in Gujarat.
Rs. 1 lakh donated
The Federation of Fishermen Cooperative Societies has donated Rs.
1 lakh for the Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund.
Garments and materials were also collected by a special team of
volunteers deputed by some organisations in and around
Pondicherry.
Rally planned
The Pondicherry-based weekly newspaper, Voice of Pondicherry,
will take out a rally to mobilise relief materials and funds for
the quake victims in Gujarat.
A communication from the director of the newspaper said today
that the fund raised through the rally would be deposited in the
Chief Minister`s Welfare Fund account.
HCL's drive
The Pondicherry unit of HCL Infosystems Limited, in collaboration
with the Rotary Club (Mid Town), holds a joint drive in
Pondicherry on Thursday to collect materials from the public.
A van collecting the materials from people will cover Lawspet,
Muthialpet, Nellithope, Mudaliarpet, Ariankuppam, Indira Nagar,
VVP Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Mettupalayam, Jipmer campus and Subbiah
Nagar from 9.30 a.m. onwards.
Youths for Gujarat
Three youths of Pondicherry - Ramassamy, Vaithi and Karthik -
left for Gujarat on Tuesday to help the personnel in the current
rescue and relief works in the quake- ravaged Gujarat. The
regional chairman of Lions Club, Ms. Parimala Raju, said the
youth had volunteered to do their services on humanitarian
grounds.
