One-lakh 'pooris' for Gujarat

TIRUCHI, JAN. 31. The sympathy wave for the victims of quake-hit Gujarat has been enormous here and scores of housewives and college students converged to give a helping hand to make one lakh `pooris' to be airlifted tomorrow from Tiruchi to Ahamedabad.

Mr. E. R. Balarathnam, senior member of the Vedaradha Trust said the outfit had decided to send the readymade `poori' packed in butter paper.

The volunteers vied with one another to prepare the atta, press them to `poori' shape, fry them, and pack them. Necessary guidance for making and packing the `pooris' was given by the experts of the Rajasthan Bhojana Sangham. The quality of the `pooris' would not be affected for at least a week, the organisers said. The one lakh pooris neatly packed would be ready for airlifting by tomorrow noon.

Students of various colleges in the city have generously contributed clothes and cash towards quake relief.

Meanwhile a team of 30 fabrication experts with gas cutters, grinding machines and other tools for clearing debris, left today for Gujarat, said Mr. N. P. Sukumar, Tiruchi zonal chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry.

The team members were experienced in handling the cutting tools and instruments and would be useful for clearing the debris of the concrete buildings, he added.
