One-lakh 'pooris' for Gujarat
By Our Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI, JAN. 31. The sympathy wave for the victims of quake-hit
Gujarat has been enormous here and scores of housewives and
college students converged to give a helping hand to make one
lakh `pooris' to be airlifted tomorrow from Tiruchi to
Ahamedabad.
Mr. E. R. Balarathnam, senior member of the Vedaradha Trust said
the outfit had decided to send the readymade `poori' packed in
butter paper.
The volunteers vied with one another to prepare the atta, press
them to `poori' shape, fry them, and pack them. Necessary
guidance for making and packing the `pooris' was given by the
experts of the Rajasthan Bhojana Sangham. The quality of the
`pooris' would not be affected for at least a week, the
organisers said. The one lakh pooris neatly packed would be ready
for airlifting by tomorrow noon.
Students of various colleges in the city have generously
contributed clothes and cash towards quake relief.
Meanwhile a team of 30 fabrication experts with gas cutters,
grinding machines and other tools for clearing debris, left today
for Gujarat, said Mr. N. P. Sukumar, Tiruchi zonal chairman of
the Confederation of Indian Industry.
The team members were experienced in handling the cutting tools
and instruments and would be useful for clearing the debris of
the concrete buildings, he added.
